“Will You Like My Page?"

The major mistake people are making when it comes to growing their ‘likes’ on social media + how to avoid it!

I have just started to be more active on social media to expand my following and reach and one thing I find I’m invited to do by those I’m connected to is like their page. Yes, I receive that “like my page” request frequently…I’m sure you do too right? Now, for me, if I have no connection to the person behind this general request, I pretty much ignore the request and don’t like the page. I have a feeling that others, especially in the business world operate the same way.

Now, I know increasing your following and getting more likes is the name of the game. Well respected Facebook marketers tell you the key to social media success is building your page likes, your following and that it’s all about the numbers. While this is true, there is a right way and wrong way to do it that could be costing you thousands of potential revenue in your business, not to mention the headache of thinking “this doesn’t work for me”.

Earlier in the week I received a messenger message from a wedding/party entertainment company asking me to ‘Like their page” he said he was looking to get his likes up. I never responded or liked the page and a few days later he messaged again to say…I asked you to like my page but you haven’t is it because you don’t like it or don’t want to?

So, seeing the epic approach fail and the fact he asked I decided…help a guy out and share why I didn’t respond and what I recommended he do to change his approach to getting likes.

So let me shed some light on the major mistake businesses are making when it comes to growing their social following and how to avoid it

Successful marketing is NEVER about you, it’s always about your client/customer and what you can do for them. Your job when it comes to marketing is to answer two questions “so what?” and “What’s in it for me?”. Asking someone you have no relationship with to “like your page” with no incentive, value, or reason to do so just makes it all about you and that strategy ain’t ever going to work.

For most expert business owners the temptation is to use social networks to promote themselves and broadcast their messages. But if you stop thinking like a “marketer” and start thinking like a “customer”, you’ll understand that the secret to more likes and social media success is being real – being the sort of person at the party who listens attentively, tells great stories, shows interest in others and is authentic and likable, after all, people buy from people they like!

So, with this in mind, if you want to be more ‘likeable’ and ensure greater success on social media; don’t tell your prospect/customer to like you and follow you, tell them why and how they should.

Everywhere you turn you see; “like us on Facebook” and “Follow us on Instagram”, (I’ve even done it myself in the early days). Yet the success secret is to give your customers a reason to connect with you on social networks, answering the question, “what’s in it for me?” and then make it incredibly easy to do so. Note the difference between these two calls to action:

“Like my book’s page on Facebook” versus “Get answers to all your social media questions at http://xyz.com

This small step change in your approach can make a huge difference. Change your message to something that’s valuable to your target client…not only will you increase your likes, but you will attract more of the right clients for you too. Give it a go and let me know how it turned out.
